BEREA RECREATION CENTER POLICIES
BEREA RECREATION CENTER RULES
  1. Current membership, daily guest fee, or enrollment in a program is required to gain access to the recreation center.
  2. The following activities WILL NOT be tolerated and may be subject to suspension, expulsion and/or criminal prosecution: fighting, foul language, loitering (inside and outside the facility), defrauding membership, disorderly conduct, damaging equipment or property and creating a hostile environment based on race, color, religion, sex (including sexual harassment), national origin or age.
  3. The Berea Recreation Center is a smoke, drug and alcohol free facility by city ordinance.
  4. No spitting, chewing tobacco or gum allowed in the facility.
  5. No pets allowed, except those assisting a person with a disability or if a special program is scheduled.
  6. Children under 15 years of age will not be permitted in the Recreation Center after 7:30 p.m. unless accompanied by a parent/guardian unless they are participating in an organized recreation program or activity.
  7. Children under 8 years of age MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian, unless they are enrolled in an organized program.
  8. The indoor track is for patrons ages 12 and over, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  9. Weight room and aerobic equipment use is limited to patrons age 15 and over.
  10. Children 6 years of age and over may not use the locker room of the opposite sex. Please use our family locker room; located across from the women’s locker room entrance.
  11. Patrons must be at least 15 years of age to use the sauna, steam room, or whirlpool, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please see additional pool rules.
  12. Public displays of amorous affection are not permitted.
  13. The Berea Recreation Center is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.  Valuables should be left outside the facility. Lockers are available for your use. Your lock must be removed at the end of each day or Recreation staff will remove it.
  14. Only scuff-resistant shoes are permitted in the activity areas of the facility. Dark-soled athletic shoes, turf shoes, spiked shoes, boots or any other shoe that may mark the floors are prohibited. Muddy or dirty shoes are not permitted. Shoes must be worn at all times while in the facility, except in locker rooms and pool area.
  15. Eating and drinking is only permitted in designated areas of the facility.  No food is permitted on the lower level.
  16. Changes in the recreation schedule may occur without notice. Current pool schedules are available at the front desk counter.
  17. Each area of the facility has individual rules for your safety and enjoyment. Please follow these rules.
  18. The Berea Recreation Center Staff reserves the right to add, change or delete any rules that in our judgment will help to maintain a safe environment.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION POLICIES
  • Participant(s) must fill out a program registration form, available at the Berea Recreation Center front desk counter, and pay the registration fee to be registered for a program.
  • Program fees can be paid by cash or check (made out to Berea Recreation) at the Berea Recreation Center front desk.
  • Program registration is taken on a first come first serve basis. Most programs have a minimum and maximum number of participants so it is important that you register as soon as possible.
  • Non-Residents are put on a program waiting list and contacted one week prior to the start of the program to be told if there is space available. There is an additional non-resident fee for the programs.
  • NO registrations will be accepted after the registration deadline

PROGRAM REFUND POLICY
Program refunds will only be issued for the following circumstances:
  • The Berea Recreation Department has canceled the program.
  • Health or medical excuse written by physician. *Participant(s) assume the risk of changes in personal affairs or health.

WEIGHT ROOM
Trained staff members are available during all hours of operation to instruct members on the proper use of weight and aerobic equipment.**Weight room and aerobic equipment are only to be used by patrons 15 and over.

OUTDOOR POOL
  • The outdoor pool facility consists of a wading pool that is zero depth to 2 1/2 feet. It contains a water fall mushroom in the shallow end. The large pool is 3 ft. to 5 ft. It has a diving well with one diving board. There is also a slide in the 3 foot end of the pool. We offer lounge chairs and vending machines that provide food and beverages. The outdoor pool is open daily 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please click on the registration forms link to get a list of specific hours and fees pertaining to the current year schedule.

INDOOR POOL

  • Please ask the lifeguard on duty or the pool manager if you have any questions regarding pool rules or procedures.
  • The indoor pool hours differ monthly. Please pick up a monthly schedule at the front counter. The pool is 3 feet 6 inches deep in the shallow end, and 7 feet deep in the deep end. The pool temperature is kept at approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit. A lap lane is available during adult and open swim times. During class times, the pool is available to only those in the class.
  • There is a sauna, steam room, and spa (whirlpool) available in the pool area for use by patrons 15 and over, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The sauna provides dry heat, and the steam room provides moist heat.  The spa (whirlpool) is kept at approximately 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Water barbells, float belts, kick boards, and noodles are available for ADULT exercise use. This equipment is not for children.

INDOOR POOL RULES
    1. Obey the lifeguard at all times.
    2. Walk on the deck
    3. NO DIVING
    4. Two whistle blasts means an emergency-clear the pool immediately.
    5. 17 years and older in the lap lane.
    6. No pushing, dunking, rough play or foul language.
    7. No masks, snorkels, noodles, floats, glass, food/drink, alcohol, gum in the pool area. (Other equipment at discretion of the life guard an duty)
    8. Children wearing approved flotation must be within an arms length of a parent or legal guardian.
    9. Rest periods will be called, by the lifeguard, when deemed necessary.
    10. Patrons are not permitted in the equipment benches. Ask the lifeguard on duty for assistance,
    11. Patrons are not permitted in the pool area during scheduled classes.
    12. Children under the age of 15 are not permitted in the spa (whirlpool), sauna, and steam room, unless they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
    13. Children under 8 years of age must be accompanied in the pool area by an adult 18 or older.
    14. Children who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper or rubber pants ever a regular diaper.
Patrons not following the pool rules will be asked to leave.

Definitions and Additional Requirements:

Residents - Are defined as people who LIVE in the city of Berea. A valid driver’s license or State ID and two current proofs of residency are required by any individual over the age of 18 when applying for or renewing a membership. Items accepted as proofs of residency include: utility bills, credit card bills and bank statements that are mailed in your name to your Berea address.

Works in Berea - This membership is available for employees of a Berea establishment. The employee must show a valid driver’s license or State ID and CURRENT pay stub that shows City of Berea taxes are deducted.

Non-resident - A valid driver’s license or State ID is required at the time of initial membership.

Family - A “family” is defined as up to four directly related individuals (2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children or 1 adult and 1 child) who reside in the same dwelling. Children are considered anyone under age 18. If there is more than one family residing in a single dwelling, they must have separate memberships. ALL family members must be registered at the same time to receive the discounted family rate. To qualify as a “family” the relations must be in the first degree of consanguinity or marriage. A child within the legal custody of an adult will be considered in the “family” for membership purposes upon presentation of a valid judicial entry establishing custody or guardianship.

Proof of Age – A birth certificate, drivers license or college ID may be required to establish age.

Annual membership rates are valid one year from the date of purchase. Rates are subject to change. At this time, we can accept personal checks or cash only.


MEMBERSHIP CARD

Photo identification cards will be issued to each member of the Berea Recreation Center. This card must be presented each time to enter the facility. Membership cards are the property of the Berea Recreation Center and can be suspended or revoked for policy infractions. Membership cards are not transferable.


YOUTH PROGRAMS

BATON

Girls 6-13 years old of all skill levels can join instructor Jill Folino, the owner of the Pink Ladies Baton Corp. at the Berea Recreation Center for twirling class. Sessions are available year round and girls will march in seasonal parades. www.PinkLadiesBaton.com

PEE WEE SPORTS

A fun program for children ages 3 – 6 designed to teach them the basics of sports activities while learning how to work as a group. Activities include kickball, soccer, basketball, baseball, parachute, relays and other fun games. Registration is limited. Please call for more information on session dates, times and fees.


YOUTH T-BALL

This league plays on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings during the summer months. It is open to 4, 5, & 6 year old BEREA RESIDENTS ONLY. Registration begins in March.

GIRL'S 7-9 SOFTBALL LEAGUE

This league is an introduction to the game of softball. Practices are held at the coach’s discretion at various times throughout the week. Umpires will pitch to the players and games will be Monday and Wednesday evenings at Lou Groza Fields. Registration begins in March.

GIRL'S 10-12 SOFTBALL LEAGUE

This league moves into a more developed game of softball. The league introduces the girls to pitching and to being pitched to by the opposing team. Practices are held at the coach’s discretion at various times throughout the week. Games are held Monday and Wednesday evenings at Lou Groza fields. Registration begins in March.

GIRL'S 13-14 SOFTBALL LEAGUE

This is a competitive league where girls will compete in the Southwest Girls Softball League with surrounding cities. Practices begin in May at the coach’s discretion at various times through-out the week. Players must live in or attend a school in Berea. Registration begins in March.

GIRL'S FASTPITCH SOFTBALL TRAVEL LEAGUE

Tryouts are held in August or September. Teams are formed for 10u,12u,14u in the Fall. Registrations are taken in March for the 18U teams. Any girls interested in the Girls Fastpitch Travel League should contact the Berea Recreation Center for details.


Youth Baseball

This recreational league will play with teams in the surrounding area. Practices begin in May at the coach’s discretion at various times throughout the week. Players must live in or attend a school in Berea. Registration begins in March.

Youth Soccer

Berea Youth Soccer is committed to promoting soccer in our community. We organize both a fall and spring season for boys and girls teams. We have a Munchkins program for children ages 3-6 as well as both Recreation and Travel programs for children ages 7-14. For more information please visit bereayouthsoccerclub.org


SAFETY TOWN

Safety Town is an annual summer educational program for children who will be attending Kindergarten in the fall. Through a variety of interactive activities and field trips and the use of bikes, traffic signals and classroom activities, children will focus on safety skills that can be used on a daily basis. Class sizes are limited and are accepted on a first come first serve basis. Two summer sessions are available with both morning and afternoon classes.

1st & 2nd GRADE YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL

Learn football skills and have fun too! Instructional clinics and games are held mid September through early November. Program meets at Berea High School on Saturday mornings. Registration begins July 15th. Players must live in or attend a school in Berea.

Games are held mid September through early November one week day evening and Saturday mornings. Registration begins July 15th. Players must live in or attend a school in Berea. This program is combined with the Middleburg Heights Rec. League.

TRI-CITY TACKLE FOOTBALL

This program allows Berea Youths ages 9-13 to learn tackle football basics. The program is combined with Middleburg Heights and Brook Park with games being played in Brook Park. Registrations are taken at the Brook Park Rec. Center in June and the program starts in September. Please call the Brook Park Rec at (216) 433-1545 for current fees.


GIRLS 4/5 INSTRUCTIONAL VOLLEYBALL

4th and 5th grade girls will learn volleyball basics that will prepare them for the 6th -8th grade league. Program begins in September and ends in late October . It is held Saturday afternoons at the Berea Rec. Registration begins August 1st

GIRLS 6-8 YOUTH VOLLEYBALL

This is a developmental girl’s league for the 6th – 8th graders. This league competes with Middleburg Heights and Brook Park, but no standings are kept. Registration begins August 1st. Practice begins mid September. Games are held weekday evenings and Saturday mornings at Roehm Middle School and other surrounding cities.

1st & 2nd GRADE YOUTH BASKETBALL

Develop basketball skills, meet new friends and have a good time! Instructional clinics and games held Saturdays at the Berea Rec. Center. This program starts the first Saturday in January until late February. Registration begins in October. Check registration forms for current session & fees.


3rd – 8th GRADE BOYS AND GIRLS YOUTH BASKETBALL

Teams are formed for both girls and boys in 3rd and 4th grade. games are played Saturday mornings at Roehm Middle School. Based on enrollment this league may be combined with the Brook Park Rec or the Middleburg Hts. Rec. Practices begin late November and games begin early January. The season ends in March.

5th – 8th grade games are played Saturday afternoons at Berea High or away to surrounding cities. Practices begin late November and games start mid December (except the 7-8th grade girls who begin in January). The season ends in March.

MEN'S DIVISION I SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUE

This league consists of up to 8 teams who play at Lou Groza fields on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Teams need to register in February. The season begins in mid May and ends in August.


MEN'S DIVISION II SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUE

This league consists of up to 16 teams who play at Lou Groza fields or Dora Lee Payne fields on Thursday and Sunday evenings. Teams need to register in February. The season begins in mid May and ends in august.


CO-ED SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUE

This league consists of up to 8 teams who play at Dora Lee Payne field on Friday evenings. Teams need to register in February. The season begins in early June and ends in late August.

MEN'S FALL SOFTBALL LEAGUE

The Fall League consists of up to 8 teams and plays on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Lou Groza Fields. Registrations are taken in August. The season begins on the first Tuesday after Labor Day and runs for approximately 6 weeks.


ADULT CO-ED & MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Men’s open gym is Tuesday nights from 8-10 pm at Roehm Middle School and Co-Ed open gym is Thursdays from 8-10 pm at Roehm Middle School. We will no longer be able to accept cash payments at the program site. We will offer punchcards for individual classes or a session pass. You must purchase a punchcard or pass prior to attending the program. Passes can only be purchased at the Berea Recreation Center. Passes must be shown to the league director EVERY week. You will not be admitted without your pass. Vollyball is cancelled whenever the Berea City Schools are cancelled due to inclilment weather. Check the registration forms for current session and fees. 30 AND OVER MEN'S BASKETBALL LEAGUE

This league is open to men 30 and over. This league plays on Monday nights at Berea High School. Registrations are taken in October and the program runs from November through March. Teams are allowed a 14 player roster. Please call for current fees. More Information & registration here!

Zumba combines high energy and motivating music with unique moves and combinations that allow you to dance away your worries. It is based on the principle that a workout should be fun and easy to do. You can start at any level. Zumba is not only great for the body, but is also great for the mind. It is a "feel happy workout." Try this exciting class of the hottest Latin dance aerobics ever. A certified Zumba instructor will introduce you to Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue and Reggaeton. Experience the most fun you will ever have while exercising and burn 500-600 calories in one hour! Intensa-Fit - Muscle

PhysiFit - The Fundamentals

This four-week program is designed for boys and girls of all skill levels that are 8 - 14 years old. Together with our instructor you will learn how to safely build your muscle strength, endurance and flexibility using the weight equipment in our Youth Fitness Center. After you complete 4 one-hour sessions, you will be able to use the Youth Fitness Center to continue your exercise routine. Check registration form for dates, times and costs.

Trim & Tone - Weight Training for Women

This program is designed for adult women 18 and older. You will learn how to safely build your muscle strength, endurance and flexibility using the weight equipment in our Grindstone Room and Weight Room. Demonstrations and explanations will be given as a group and individually so you feel confident in continuing your exercise routine when the course is complete. Racquetball Lessons

Racquetball is a great game for people of all ages at all fitness levels. If you've always wanted to learn the basics of the game, this is your opportunity to receive semi-private lessons from Berea Recreation staff member Terry Lenaburg. Each class will have a maximum of 3 persons. During each one-hour lesson, you will learn the basics of the game and have some playing time with your fellow classmates and instructor. This class is appropriate for those new to racquetball or those who need to improve their game skills. Check registration form for dates, times and costs.


Dog Obedience

All dog obedience classes are taught by Cindy Hoppes, of Pawsitively Good Pup Dog Training. She has been the owner of an in-home pet-sitting service since 1999 and is accredited through Petsitters International. She is also a Professional level member of the International Association of Canine Professionals and an AKA Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Canine Good Citizen/Therapy

This class is designed to get students prepared for the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test and the Delta Pet Partners test. The Canine Good Citizen(CGC) is a AKC certification program and Delta is the most extensive and reputable of the therapy dog organizations. Dogs must have completed Basic or Puppy(or have been evaluated by instructor) Class includes CGC test on last night. A Delta evaluator is available for scheduled test dates. Dog should be at least 7 months old.

Basic Obedience

This class will cover the skills your dog needs to be a well behaved companion. Your dog will learn these commands: SIT, DOWN, STAND, COME, LEASH WORK, LEAVE IT, WAIT, MOVE and STAY.

Clicker Tricks

In Clicker Tricks Class your dog will learn fun behaviors like "high five", "crawl" "play dead", "take a bow" to put away his toys or even fetch a "beverage" for you from a cooler. In the process, you will strengthen the bond with your pet, keep him mentally challenged, improve his ability to focus on you and have a ton of fun. This class is open to dogs, 12-weeks and up. Dogs should know basic obedience and commands.

O'Gility

Dogs will move around a course and perform the skills or maneuvers specified at each station, like down, then jump, then stay. As the class progresses the dogs will begin to participate in a low key competition with each other. They will gain new skills and sharpen established ones. They will also learn self control and to focus in the presence of other dogs. They must have completed a basic obedience class and not have aggression issues.

Get Fit With Fido! - Community Holiday Dog Walk - Held quarterly

Join us for a FREE, fun one-mile dog walk...Snow, Rain or Shine! Meet in front of the Coe Lake Gazebo at 8:45 am. The walk will begin at 9 am. Dogs must be on-leash and walkers are responsible for dog waste clean-up. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE! No registration is required. Next date is in December.


YOUTH AQUATIC PROGRAM

Infants and Tots

This level is developed for students 6 months to 3 years of age. This class builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. The class will learn the following skills; water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more.

Pre-requisite: Must be accompanied by an adult, must be at least 6 months on first day of class.

Pre-School

This level is designed for students who are ready to break free of their parents. For students ages 3-6. Students will learn the following skills; water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more

Pre-requisite: Children must be prepared to be in the water without their parents.

Level 1

The purpose of this level is to help students feel comfortable in the water. Students will begin to learn how to submerge eyes, nose and mouth in the water and search the bottom of the pool for objects. The will explore swimming on their front and back with support and how to use a lifejacket.

Pre-requisite: Ability to stand on bottom of the pool will help with comfort but is not required.

Level 2

This level teaches students the fundamental aquatic skills. They begin to learn how to use their skills in the water on their own. New skills that will be learned in this level are jumping in from the side of the pool and bobbing.

Pre-requisite: Must be able to do a front float unassisted and glide on the front for 3 body lengths.

Level 3

This level is designed to teach stroke development. The students will continue to develop the skills they have learned in previous levels. They will learn how to perform the front crawl with rhythmic breathing, butterfly kick, and treading water.

Pre-requisite: Must be able to swim 10 yards of front and back crawl and be comfortable in 5 foot area of the pool.

Level 4

The purpose of this level is to develop student’s confidence in the skills they have already learned and to improve other aquatic skills, such as breaststroke, elementary back stroke and butterfly, swimming under water and the scissors kick.

Pre-requisite: Must be able to swim front and back crawl for 15 yards.

Level 5

This level provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Students will continue to work on front and back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Students will be introduced to surface dives, flip turns, diving and survival swimming.

Pre-requisite: Must be able to swim front and back crawl for 25 yards and swim elementary backstroke and breaststroke for 15 yards.

ADULT WATER PROGRAMS


EASY DOES IT

This class consists of various water exercises and use of resistance. It builds cardiovascular endurance and tones muscles. Low impact and low-medium intensity.

DEEP WATER EXERCISE

This class offers aerobic conditioning in the deep water. With the use of special belts, which make you float, you will be able to get a high intensity, no impact workout. Great for athletes recovering from injury or surgery, as well as those who would like a change in their aerobic workout.

ARTHRITIS WATER EXERCISE

This class includes slow, gentle stretching and range of motion exercises to help those with arthritis maintain a basic level of fitness. Class takes place in the shallow end of the pool and no swimming skills are necessary.

SHALLOW WATER AEROBICS
This water exercise course is sure to get your heart pumping.  The class is designed to give you an excellent cardio workout, along with weight training.

INSTRUCTOR’S CHOICE

Anyone who is enrolled in any of the water exercise courses are permitted to attend the instructor’s choice classes.  At the beginning of the class the instructor will find out what the class is most interested in learning and that is what the class will be geared towards. During this class it is a nice opportunity to try out classes that other instructors have taught and learn some new things for water exercise.

ADULT SWIMMING LESSONS
This class is designed to aid each persons individual goals.  On the first day of class individuals will be asked to set their goals for the course and the instructor will help the participant work towards those goals.  A participant could be afraid of the water and they just want to learn how to feel comfortable in the water. While another participant could want to learn how to refine a specific stroke, or how to do flip turns.  The instructor will help you reach each individual goal.
