Barbara J.
Sherwood

Busy and successful people often carry many titles. She might, for example, answer to the Cookie Lady, the Sunshine Lady, the Giver with the Givingest, the Chronicler of Goodwill, the Quoter of Great Quotes, Madame Publicist, or Mrs. Dedicated. All of these, and more, have been bestowed upon Barbara Sherwood to recognize her unswerving dedication to her hobby, PEOPLE.

Barbara, her husband of 50 years, Dick, and their two sons, David and Michael, came to Berea in 1956. Betsy was born in 1959. Barbara, the eighth of the thirteen children of a minister, was born in Michigan but spent most of her educational years in Morgantown, W. Virginia. She earned a journalism degree at WVU which provided the essential tool toward fulfilling her writing destiny. In Berea, for ten years she wrote a "who's who" column in St. Adelbert's Church publication, has done publicity for countless groups, clubs and organizations, and, while president of the Berea Area Historical Society, edited the quarterly "Enterprise". And now, for the twelfth year, Barbara is putting her journalistic skills to work in the News Sun's "Dateline Berea". On top of these she still has found time to be "Your Rovin' Reporter" for Berea Senior Center's newsletter for 28 years.

Cookies -- she's baked thousands of them, for schools, churches, clubs and for the lobby of the Berea Summer Theater at BST receptions.

And books -- she loves those too. Barbara was librarian at Smith school, has run several book sales for the Berea Library, is a frequent volunteer at school libraries and tutors young people in reading. She serves on the volunteer council of the Berea City School District.

When Barb isn't writing, she can usually be found baking cookies or delivering small sunshine packages to shut-ins or the Hospital. Or, just as likely, spreading sunshine.

As a longtime active member of Beta Sigma Phi, the national service sorority, Barbara has participated in many local service projects, including Berea Welfare. She has been Service chair for this organization.

We salute Barbara Sherwood, 1998's Citizen of the Year! She represents, in abundance, all of the fine qualities of selflessness and dedication to serving others that make Berea such a fine place to live. For more than forty years, her life has "made a difference" in our lives. Hats off to Barbara Sherwood, Berea's 32nd Grindstone Award winner!
