1992 - William H. Beyer
GRINDSTONE AWARD
1992

William H.
Beyer

Service to God, to Man, Country and Community may seem like a large order, but it is one which Bill Beyer has always been uniquely able to fill.

Bill has the quality of greatness which, for many years has led him to undertake leadership roles in many forms of public service but always in a quiet and unassuming way.

Berea has always had the benefit of his public-spirited service, as Bill is a lifelong Berean. He graduated from Berea High in 1951 all-everything, then from Baldwin Wallace College where he was captain of the Yellow Jacket football team. After military service, he pursued graduate studies at Kent State University.

Soon after graduating from B-W, Bill was commissioned in the US Marine Corps where he served on active duty for three years, then as a reserve officer until his retirement in 1985 with the rank of Colonel.

His working life has been spent in the insurance business, but Bill Beyer's dedication to community service and volunteerism have been an equally large part of his life for over 33 years. This civic-mindedness was reflected in his longtime membership in Berea Jaycees, Berea Rotary and Discover Berea / Chamber of Commerce. He lent his support to many health and charitable organizations, ran for Berea City Council in 1983 and presently serves on the Mayor's Committee for Sewer and Water.

He was chairman of a Berea School task force in 1992. He also has been a valued trustee of the Southwest Community Health Foundation for seven years.

Bill is quite active in world missions for his church and holds memberships in the Berea Area Historical Society, American Legion, Marine Corps League and Baldwin Wallace alumni groups.

Bill's interest in fitness has never waned; he is an active and accomplished distance runner and scuba diver.

He has been married to Joan for 37 years and they have two grown children.

This is Bill Beyer -- volunteer, civic leader, activist, long involved in things that make Berea a better place to live, work and play. He is the winner of the twenty-seventh Grindstone Award as Outstanding Citizen for the year 1992.
